Exporting STEP from Creo and checking your BOM.
Creo exports an assembly to STEP with the whole structure in it. Below: the export, the BOM from a table or report and how to check model and BOM against each other.

01 Export
Exporting STEP from PTC Creo Parametric.
- 1 Open the assembly and choose File > Save a Copy.
- 2 Choose STEP (*.stp) as type and open the export options.
- 3 Choose the application protocol (AP214 or AP242) and export the assembly as one file with the whole structure.
- 4 Save and check the file in the free STEP viewer.
Simplified representations
If you export from a simplified rep, the STEP contains only what is in that representation. Check in the viewer that the number of parts matches what you expect.
Family tables
Parts from a family table get their instance name in the export. Make sure that name is also on your BOM, otherwise a line cannot be matched later.
02 BOM
BOM from PTC Creo Parametric to Excel.
- 1 Make a drawing with a BOM table (repeat region) of the assembly, or make a BOM report in assembly mode.
- 2 Save the table as CSV or a text file.
- 3 Open the file in Excel and save it as .xlsx.
Creo does not write the BOM directly as Excel. Via a table on the drawing or a report you get CSV or text, and Excel opens that fine.

03 Check
Does the model match the BOM?
Export the STEP and the BOM at the same moment: otherwise you compare two versions. Then you can lay them against each other.

01 How do I get a BOM from Creo into Excel?
Via a BOM table on a drawing or a BOM report in assembly mode, saved as CSV or a text file. You open that in Excel and save as .xlsx.
02 Which STEP version is best to export from Creo?
AP214 or AP242. Both contain the product structure with assemblies, parts and quantities, which is what you need for a BOM and a check on the model. AP203 works too, but contains less (for example no colours).
03 Can I view such an export without a CAD licence?
Yes. Open the .stp or .step file in the free STEP viewer on this site: you see the 3D model, the product structure and the BOM, and you can download the BOM as Excel. The file stays on your own computer.
