Exporting STEP from Fusion and checking your BOM.
Fusion exports the whole design to one STEP file. The BOM comes from the Bill of Materials or from a table on the drawing.

01 Export
Exporting STEP from Autodesk Fusion.
- 1 Open the design and choose File > Export.
- 2 Choose STEP (*.step) as type and pick a location on your own computer.
- 3 Export and check the file in the free STEP viewer.
Components, not bodies
Only real components end up as a part in the structure. Loose bodies within one component become one part together, and that is how they will count on your BOM.
Names
The component name is what ends up in the STEP. Components that are still called "Component1" cannot be matched to a BOM line later.
02 BOM
BOM from Autodesk Fusion to Excel.
- 1 Open the Bill of Materials of your design and share or export that list.
- 2 Or make a drawing with a BOM table and on the toolbar choose Export > Export CSV.
- 3 Open the CSV in Excel and save it as .xlsx.
No BOM at hand? The free STEP to Excel makes one from the model itself: per part the total quantity, the material and the dimensions.
03 Check
Does the model match the BOM?
Export the STEP and the BOM at the same moment: otherwise you compare two versions. Then you can lay them against each other.

01 Why is my whole design one single part in the STEP?
Then the parts are bodies instead of components. Turn them into components (or export per component) and the product structure does end up in the file.
02 Which STEP version is best to export from Fusion?
AP214 or AP242. Both contain the product structure with assemblies, parts and quantities, which is what you need for a BOM and a check on the model. AP203 works too, but contains less (for example no colours).
03 Can I view such an export without a CAD licence?
Yes. Open the .stp or .step file in the free STEP viewer on this site: you see the 3D model, the product structure and the BOM, and you can download the BOM as Excel. The file stays on your own computer.
