What belongs in the title block?

The title block holds everything needed to place the drawing: drawing number, title, revision, date, author, scale, unit, projection method and material. Everything that is also in the model or the PDM system should be linked and not filled in by hand.

The fields

Which fields you use exactly depends on your company and your customer. There is an international standard for the data in a title block (ISO 7200), and many companies also have their own template. This is what is almost always in it in practice.

Why you link them

Every field that someone fills in by hand falls behind sooner or later. The model changes, the property changes with it, but the text in the title block stays where it was.

In every CAD package you can fill the fields from properties of the model or from the PDM system. That costs time once when making the template and saves you a check at every revision afterwards.

Material is the field where this goes wrong most often, because in many companies it is filled in both in the model and on the drawing. Choose one source.

The errors that linger

Title blocks are copied from a previous drawing. That is efficient, but it also means something of the previous drawing always stays in it.

A revision that belonged to the previous drawing
The name of the colleague who once made the template
A date that was never updated
A scale that no longer fits after changing the view
A material from an earlier version
A projection method that does not match the views

One source per item

The rule of thumb is simple: every item has one source. If it is in the PDM system, it comes from there. If it is in the model, it comes from there. The drawing only shows what lives nowhere else.

That way a check can actually establish something. If the title block leads a life of its own, you can only check it by eye, and then every drawing is manual work again.

01 Which standard covers the title block?

ISO 7200 describes which data belongs in a title block. The text of the standard is protected by copyright, so it is not reproduced here; the fields above are the practical version you see at most companies.

02 Should the projection method be on it?

It is advisable as soon as your drawings leave your own workshop. First and third angle give a mirrored reading of the same views, and that is an expensive mistake.

03 Can a check read the title block?

Yes, as long as the PDF contains real text and is not an image. The fields can then be compared with the file name, the model and the other drawings of the same design.
